Career Development Workshops 10/3/15 and 12/5/15 and MBTI for PGRs

Dear Postgraduate Researcher,

We have two different types of careers workshops coming up on Tuesday the 10th of March and Tuesday the 12th of May 2015 for PGRs. On each of these days we will be running Building a Successful Academic Career and Future Proof Your Career. Both sessions will be delivered by Dr Jen Allanson. You can book on either workshop or both of them on the day by going here:

Building a Successful Academic Career

Worldwide, the number of PhD graduates competing for secure academic positions is increasing every year. It is more important than ever to stand out. Understanding what is required to secure and maintain a successful academic career can help you better position yourself for success.

During this interactive workshop we’ll look at:

• academic career paths
• UK national guidelines for promotion
• stakeholders within and outside the academy
• research leadership
• innovation
• support networks

We’ll consider issues of engagement and dissemination to ensure research has an identifiable impact on society and the economy. This is an increasingly important requirement for securing public funding for your research. You’ll be invited to reflect on your achievements, motivations and aspirations and to consider your successful future academic self.

The overall aim of the workshop is to develop your future-focus and to encourage you to plan and position yourself for a successful career in academia (and beyond).

Future Proof Your Career

There are no jobs for life anymore. This is not necessarily a bad thing because you won’t remain the same person for the whole of your working life. But how on earth can you plan for the future when you don’t know who you’ll be or what you’ll want and need?

In this workshop we’ll look at the changing world of work. You’ll be invited to reflect on who you are in reference to the workplace. Some of the aspects we’ll consider are:

• Your learning journey
• Your values
• Your achievements, challenges and motivations
• Your skillset

We’ll examine any unfulfilled ambitions for clues to what may lie ahead and put in place some mechanisms for periodically checking whether what you are doing is in support of who you are becoming.
